Wedding Flowers

So originally I was going to go with just calla lilies. Plain and simple, right? Well that was until someone informed me that callas are the DEATH FLOWER!! (dum dum dum dum).

So I looked it up and sure enough I found several references to the calla lily being commonly used at funerals.

First of all - Who says that? To a bride? About her wedding flowers?

Second of all- I didn't really care, but it was on my mind and I didn't want to be thinking about that on my wedding day.

So my Mom and Rene suggested I take another look at flowers and try to come up with a new plan. This past weekend my Mom paid me a visit and we browsed the flower books and mags once again and came up with some new ideas.

Ok I apologize for the poor quality of these images. My flash died and the lighting wasn't good and I have no more excuses.

I really like the idea of lots of white with some yellow popping up here and there. The plan is to hopefully use white peonies, hydrangeas and roses mixed with some big bold yellow flowers. And we wanted to tie in the citrus theme so thats when we came up with the lemon slices.

My mom and I were so excited about the new idea that we ran to the grocery store and grabbed any white or yellow flower that resembled the look we were going for and put together these little creations. Now they're just a rough draft. I know Rene's will look a million times better but hopefully this will give you an idea of what we have in mind.

I also really like the look of the square vases, not sure about the little beads in them though. What do you guys think? I'm open to ideas and suggestions.

P.S. You'll notice there are a few calla lilies in these arrangements because I can't just totally let them go....

I'm glad you are open to suggestions about the beads because I didn't really like them. What about wrapping a ribbon around the outside of the vase? Then you couldn't do the lemon thing. Or what about doing only lemons to help the flowers stand? That might sound weird but I've seen it done well. I'll send some examples.

I agree, not crazy about the beads. The flowers look great and I love the lemons. I'll send you a pic of my centerpieces, I did whole lemons and limes; maybe you can get some ideas. Great job and good luck!!

I love the china mums in yellow and the lemons! The beads don't fit in quite...My florist used two square vases. A small one to hold the flowers and then placed it in the big square vase with the sliced lemons. Works beautifully! The flowers are gorgeous though!

I think the look of all lemon slices would really stand out! I love the fluffy looking yellow flowers - gorgeous!

I didn't really like the beads. What about Lemons and limes in the vase? You could even do whole ones. I love the big, fluffy yellow flowers. I am horrible with flower names, so I don't know what they're called.

Hi, I commented before I read the others and just realized I said the same thing as everyone else combined :)

Well everyone else said what I was thinking. I like the idea of whole lemons and limes. The other options is the 2 vases like lyndsey said and have sliced lemons on the outside.

I love the square vases with the lemon - so perfect for you! I'm with everyone else on the beads - not a big fan.

Shelbs...gorgeous! I love the square vases and jamie's ribbon idea. You could find 3 or 4 ribbons in your color scheme and mix it up at the various tables.
I love this lemon look too: http://weddings.theknot.com/ODB/THEMES/realweddings/detailview.aspx?id=25474&type=3&colors=Yellow&pageIndex=1&Wedding_Details=Centerpieces&pageIndex=11

ps...I had a few calla lilies in my bouquet and i am totally still standin'! i say go for it if you love them!

Wow guys! Thanks for all the comments. So I guess I'll lose the beads, huh? :) Rich's mom will be here in a few weeks so we'll test out some other ideas. Stay Tuned....

The yellow flowers are so pretty, especially mixed with white. It's unfortunate someone told you callas are "Death flowers". Square vases are great, but I'm with everyone else on the beads. Bigger glass "blobs" often look nice in flower vases, and come in all different colors.

I love calla lillies, they are beautiful...who cares, use them! :) Also, I really love white peonies (might be the big fluffy ones that Avery was referring to) they would look really pretty in the vases too. Love the lemons in square vases too!

I worked in a flower shop for 5 years, and we did callas many many times more for weddings than for funerals... also you can get them in a bright yellow, which would be different than the white ones you have now... just a suggestion. Also, have you thought about gerber daisies? They would go well with your citrus look. Love the lemons in the vases :) -Carmen
